Exploring Amsterdam's Surroundings on Two Wheels: Three Delightful Bike Tours

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

The Netherlands is renowned for its picturesque canals, historical architecture, and cycling culture. In this blog post, I’ll take you on three exciting bike tours that showcase the city's beauty and offer a glimpse into its surrounding areas. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a casual rider, these tours promise unforgettable experiences and beautiful sceneries.

1. Amsterdam to Zandvoort

Our first bike tour takes you from the heart of Amsterdam to the charming coastal town of Zandvoort, a beachside paradise known for its pristine sandy shores. Begin your journey by pedaling through Amsterdam's streets, passing iconic landmarks such as the Anne Frank House and the Royal Palace. As you leave the city behind, the scenery gradually transitions from urban to pastoral, with scenic polder landscapes and, if you’re lucky, tulip fields accompanying your ride.

Heading west, follow the well-marked cycling paths that lead you through villages, peaceful dunes, and nature reserves. After approximately 25 kilometers of cycling, you'll arrive in Zandvoort. Take a refreshing dip in the North Sea, eat some delicious seafood, or simply relax and enjoy.

2. Amsterdam to Zaandam

For a glimpse into traditional Dutch architecture and the country's industrial heritage, embark on our second bike tour from Amsterdam to Zaandam. Pedal along the scenic banks of the river IJ, passing picturesque windmills and charming wooden houses. These historic structures, such as the famous Zaanse Schans, provide a fascinating insight into the Netherlands' rich cultural past.

After a leisurely 10-kilometer ride, you'll reach Zaandam, a town brimming with cultural attractions, charming canals, and quaint shops. Explore the bustling streets, visit the Czar Peter House Museum, or relax at a waterfront café. To return to Amsterdam, you can either retrace your route or take a ferry ride across the river.

3. Exploring Nieuwe Meer

Our final bike tour takes you on a scenic loop around the beautiful Nieuwe Meer, a large lake located southwest of Amsterdam. Starting from the city, follow the cycling paths that meander through lush greenery and along the shimmering lake. This idyllic ride offers a perfect blend of nature and urban surroundings, and you'll have ample opportunities for picnics, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the serene atmosphere.

Cycling is an integral part of Amsterdam's culture, and these three bike tours allow you to explore this beautiful city and its surroundings. From the coast to historic windmills and serene lakes, these tours offer a unique perspective of the Netherlands. So, hop on a bike and embark on an unforgettable journey through the charming outskirts of Amsterdam!
