How to successfully transition to university life: 5 tips for new students

When life is a mess…

5 tips for new students

Starting your studies at university can be very challenging, especially during your first year, as everything is new. If you are an international student and living alone for the first time, it is quite fun, but you constantly have lots to do, whether it's your laundry, studying, cooking or working. Together with independence, you have lots of obligations.

You become responsible for yourself and are more likely to be the only one who can  do your tasks - your family won't be able to help you in the same way :').

Therefore, there might be some days when you feel stressed and overwhelmed with groupworks, exams, working, etc. That's why I'd like to share my 5 tips for new students that help me deal better with these situations and I hope it works for you too!

  1. Talk to someone Having a supporting network is extremely important, and being able to chat with someone or just talk about your day can help you to reduce stress and chill out. It can be a friend back from home, your roommate or even a colleague, it will make things smoother!

  2. Organisation Planning is key when you have multiple responsibilities and limited time, like every student >_< With a realistic agenda and considering that you are not a robot, you can better organise your tasks in an achievable way by prioritising activities and following the plan.

  3. “You reap what you sow” Okay, sticking to the plan might be very challenging. We all procrastinate. So, during exam weeks, for example, I always try to remind myself that it will be over soon and what I´ll gain from doing that. Try to look at the big picture of why you decided to study and what your purpose is. Reward yourself when you're done ;)

  4. Go for a walk, connect with nature There are many green spots around Amsterdam and nearby VU Amsterdam, contact with nature might be recharging and can refresh your mind. Just breathe and have some me-time.

  5. Balance  Studying is important, working as well, but your mental health should be a priority. It's not  the end of the world if you fail a subject or if you can't manage to finish a project. Don't push yourself too hard and give yourself a break!

That's it! I hope these tips will help you start your studies smoothly!

Best wishes,

Luana
