Moving to a new country is exciting, but arriving at a busy international airport after a long flight can also feel overwhelming. If you are flying to Schiphol Airport for the first time, this guide will help you navigate from Schiphol to your destination with confidence.

Step 1: Getting to Amsterdam by Train

After going through security and the baggage claim, the next big question is how to actually get into Amsterdam. In my experience, taking the train is the quickest and easiest way to do so!

You can find the train station directly underneath the airport terminal. Simply follow the yellow signs marked “Trains” throughout the airport. You do not need to leave the building to reach the station.

Trains run frequently between Schiphol and Amsterdam, including Amsterdam Centraal Station, Amsterdam Sloterdijk, and Amsterdam Amstel. If you were able to find accommodation in either Uilenstede (Amstelveen) or De Boelelaan (right next to Vrije Universiteit), then the quickest route would be to take the train to Amsterdam Zuid.

Paying for Your Train Journey

Usually, you can use Dutch public transport (such as trains and buses) using a contactless debit card, credit card, or a mobile wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. Simply tap your card or device when entering and leaving the station gates. When it comes to tapping-in in Schiphol it can be a bit more difficult, because the machines are easy to miss. So keep an eye out for devices like this before going down to your train platform.

If you prefer, or if your card for some reason does not seem to be working, you can also buy a ticket from the ticket machines or service desks located near the platforms.

Step 3: Taking the Bus

If your accommodation is not close to a train station, taking a bus may make more sense.

Bus stops are located just outside the Schiphol Plaza, the main arrivals area. Follow the signs for “Buses” after exiting the arrivals hall.

As mentioned above, most buses accept contactless payment cards, so you can usually tap your card when entering and again before you leave.

Step 4: Taking a Taxi or Uber

If you have a lot of luggage or prefer direct transportation, you can take a taxi or use Uber.

Official taxis are available at the designated taxi stand directly outside Schiphol Plaza. Follow the signs for “Taxi” after leaving the arrivals hall.

For Uber and Bolt, open the app after landing and follow the instructions to the designated pick-up location at the airport.

Step 5: Finding Your Way to the University

Before travelling, it is a good idea to save your destination address and check the route using Google Maps or a public transport planning app such as 9292 or NS. These apps provide real-time information on trains, buses, trams, and metro connections throughout the Netherlands.

A Final Tip

Your first arrival in a new country may feel a little confusing, especially after a long journey. Fortunately, Schiphol Airport is well-signposted, and public transport connections are integrated directly into the airport. If you are unsure where to go, do not feel afraid to ask airport staff or visit one of the information desks, I know that I did when I first arrived.

Welcome to Amsterdam, and good luck with the start of your studies!
