One of the things I was most excited about as an international student was exploring the incredible places around Europe. One of the biggest advantages of studying in Amsterdam is how well connected the city is. Whether you're travelling by train, bus, or budget airline, it's surprisingly easy to visit different countries over a long weekend. Here are a few destinations I definitely recommend for your next adventure!
#1 Paris, France
Paris is one of the easiest trips from Amsterdam and is super perfect for a weekend vacation. You can take the famous Eurostar train and you’ll be there in about 3.5 hours (enough time for a nap ;)). For a cheaper option, you can also travel by coach with companies like FlixBus. Depending on when you book, it can be between €30-120 by train and buses can be even cheaper.
Once you're there, you can visit picturesque landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, stroll along the Seine, explore charming cafés, and enjoy plenty of delicious croissants and pastries. Paris is a great destination to explore with friends over a weekend.

#2 Dublin, Ireland
My friends and I visited Dublin in December, and we managed to find flights for just €50, an amazing deal if you ask me! The flight takes around 1 hour 40 minutes, making it a quick and easy trip.
Dublin has such a fun student life, with lively streets, cosy pubs, and friendly locals. We stayed at Abigail's Hostel, which was right in the city centre, so we could easily walk to most attractions.
You can explore the Temple Bar, visit Trinity College, hike up the cliffs, and enjoy the city's atmosphere.

#3 Berlin, Germany
Berlin is a city full of history, culture, and vibrant nightlife. It's known for landmarks like the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, and Museum Island. Additionally, there's an amazing food scene and plenty of beautiful neighborhoods to explore. I have seen budget airlines have flights from Amsterdam for around €40–€100 return if you book in advance. The flight is only about 1 hour 15 minutes. Two to three days is usually enough to experience the city's highlights.

#4 Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is an absolutely stunning place. It’s famous for its colorful Nyhavn waterfront, cycling (like the Netherlands), and cozy cafes. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a city break! Additionally, it’s clean and easy to get around.
Flights from Amsterdam usually take around 1 hour 20 minutes. If you book early, round trips can be for €50–€100.
You can spend a couple of days exploring the canals, trying Danish pastries, and enjoying the city.

#5 Milan, Italy
If you love shopping, Milan should definitely be on the top of your list. It is known as a fashion capital of the world and has many streets lined with luxury stores and cute boutiques. Beyond shopping, you can indulge yourself in authentic Italian food and coffee, and spoil yourself with gelato every evening.
Flights from Amsterdam are usually around 1 hour 45 minutes, costing around €40–€90 if booked in advance. A weekend is the perfect amount of time to experience the city.
Each of these places has something completely different to offer, making them the perfect weekend getaway from Amsterdam for a weekend. So I’d recommend grabbing your friends, keeping a watch for travel deals, and making the most of your time studying abroad!
