3 must-visit cafés & bakeries in Amsterdam

Did you know that the Dutch are the Europe’s biggest coffee drinkers? Coffee and students are a natural pairing, says our blogger Lisa. Do you agree? Read on, as Lisa has tried a lot of cafés & bakeries around and she is happy to share where you can find some delicious and cosy places in Amsterdam.

If a barista asked me how I take my coffee, I would most likely respond with “very, very seriously”. Jokes aside, students and coffee are a natural pairing. Embarrassingly, more often than not, a fresh coffee from LOKL located in the Nieuwe Universiteitsgebouw is my primary motivation to attend a 9am lecture. However, it’s not just the Vrije Universiteit that boasts a wide range of coffee hot spots; you can find a variety of cafés and bakeries dotted across Amsterdam.

I want to let you in on my top three locations where you can fulfil your caffeine cravings and settle in for a 'gezellige' afternoon with your friends. Before diving into it, note that every location is rated out of five based on the quality of its coffee and baked goods, the available seating and price. Enjoy! ☕

Fort Negen bakery

Fort Negen

A sweet bakery located in the west of Amsterdam. Though inconspicuous from the outside, this establishment offers a variety of baked goods that are to die for. A personal favourite is the almond croissant. Though the quality of food and coffee is exceptional, be aware that apart from a couple of benches outside the door there is little space to sit down.

Saint Jean café

Saint Jean

An Instagram favourite, this little café located in the Jordaan is best known for its wide selection of vegan baked goods and coffees. Though the aesthetics are immaculate there isn’t much seating available. This spot is best for a grab and go coffee or a short sit down with your friends. Due to its popularity you can expect queues on the weekends.

● Location: Lindengracht 158h, 1015 KK Amsterdam

Coffee & Coconuts café

Coffee & Coconuts

This feel good café has been converted from a former theatre to a bright and open space with plants and many cosy seating arrangements. Not only can you purchase a delicious coffee here but Coffee & Coconuts also serves fresh juices, sandwiches and hot meals. A perfect match if you are looking for a bustling studying spot in De Pijp.

● Location: Ceintuurbaan 282, 1072 GK Amsterdam

● Quality: ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕

● Seating: 🪑🪑🪑🪑

Others that didn’t make the cut but you should definitely check out are: Brioche., Back to Black Coffee, Scandinavian Embassy and Bar Botanique.

Enjoy your coffee,

Lisa
