Are you looking for a fun activity to do with friends? (But you’re also a student who is trying not to spend too much money…) Well, let me introduce you to the Cineville Pass!

Your time at the VU will be busy, but you’re also going to have fun and need to make time to relax, and what is better than a cozy movie night after a long day at uni?

I have always loved going to the cinema and even more so since being a student.

I got my pass this year in November and have gone to the cinema 30 times since then.

Let me give you 5 reasons to get the pass.

#1 - The price and what you get

For only 19€ a month, you can go as much as you want. A lot of things are expensive in Amsterdam, and a cinema ticket is between 9 and 13 euros. If you only go twice a month, you already got your money’s worth! They have a super useful app. You can reserve your ticket in advance, look at the movie schedule for the week, and keep track of the movies you watched.

Personally, I go around 5 times a month, depending on how much time I have and how many nice movies come out (It’s so worth it for me).

During the winter, there is a high chance you’ll go to the cinema at least twice, so get your pass asap!

#2 - Great group or solo activity

Since being a student, I have learned how to spend time with myself. Going to the cinema is really fun (especially if you have a movie buddy!), but also by yourself. When I don’t have a plan, this is a great last-minute plan.

A movie marathon with friends is also a great idea and will not cost you anything with the pass!

Whether you go alone or with friends, here’s a tip to make it more fun and remember it all: get a journal to keep track of your movie sessions.

I have a journal to write about all the movies I went to see. I give them a rating out of five stars and some keywords to remember it. Keep the cinema ticket and stick it in your journal.

#3 - Find some gems

Once you have the pass, going to the movies feels like it’s free. You’ll see some movies that you wouldn’t otherwise! I watched some documentaries, old movies, and independent films that didn’t have a lot of hype but were amazing, well some were questionable, but everyone has different tastes ;)

Here are some movies I probably wouldn't have seen if I did not have the pass: It was just an accident, Back to the Future, Urchin, Romería…

Ps Romería ended up being one of my favorite movies of April!

#4 - Free posters

The title is pretty self-telling, a lot of the cinemas are giving away the movie posters when new ones are replacing them. The more you go, the higher the chance you’ll have to grab one :)

#5 - Winter in Amsterdam

Fall is coming, the nights are longer and the days shorter… December and January are probably the worst times in Amsterdam, with the weather and almost no daylight. You don’t want to go out and pay 12 euros. Meaning it’s the perfect time to go to the cinema and use your pass!

Amsterdam has 21 beautiful independent cinemas, and with the pass, you can explore them all!

Let me give you some recommendations:

  • Lab111: really cool venue. A lot of events! On Wednesday, it’s pizza movie night for a great price! They project the newest movie but also classics!!

  • De Uitkijk: one of the oldest movie theaters in Amsterdam, super vintage and classics only

  • Filmhallen: a lot of new movies, the vibe is nice (one of the rooms is beautiful, cxx feels like you are in a painting), and you can have food and a drink with your friends after to debrief about the movie

  • FC Hyena: It’s in Noord, the vibe is so nice, close to the water, and you can have yummy food before!

  • Kriterion: Close to the UVA, grab a beer before or after at the student bar. The beer is cheap and they have good movie selections! It’s a staple

  • Rialto De Pijp: in the middle of De Pijp, the vibe is super cozy and feels like a small cinema. One of my favorites!

Now grab your pass, get a drink before the screening, and go try one of these cool cinemas!

Let me know what movies you ended up watching with the pass!
