Living in Amsterdam offers students a unique opportunity to explore some of Europe’s most exciting cities, all within just a few hours of travel. Weekend trips are especially popular among students, since they are cheap, flexible, and even a quick escape, which are all things desperately needed when you’re a student. Not only is transport within Amsterdam efficient, but the city is also well-connected to major destinations across Europe.

When planning a weekend trip, there are several factors to consider, but my top three priorities are always affordable transport, budget-friendly accommodation, and interesting activities. Furthermore, choosing the destination based on how much time you have is very important so that you are able to actually experience everything that you had planned. Sometimes booking in advance is needed, especially for major holidays or summers, but you can even get some great last-minute deals, as long as you stay flexible of course!
There are plenty of different transport options from Amsterdam, but it all depends on how much you are willing to spend. FlixBus will most likely be the cheapest option overall, however, this often means a layover or two, as well as a longer travel time compared to other modes of transport. Secondly, trains are a great way to travel, especially for a long-weekend Paris or London trip! Even though the Eurostar tickets may be a bit more expensive, I believe that it is totally worth it, mainly because you reach your destination in less than 4 hours in most cases. If the train or bus times are a bit too long for you, you can always fly around Europe. Ultimately, the best mode of transport depends on your priorities, whether you value saving money, reducing travel time, or choosing a more comfortable and sustainable option.
Amsterdam to Prague

One of the most popular weekend destinations from Amsterdam is Prague, and I had the opportunity to experience it myself. My friends and I booked an EasyJet flight, which took us roughly one and a half hours and passed very quickly. Although I usually prefer hostels, especially when travelling on a budget, we opted for an Airbnb as it turned out to be more affordable and in a prime location (District 2). The main highlights include the Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle. I would also highly recommend walking up the Old Castle Stairs in the evening to get a perfect view of the entire city, but be prepared, as it is quite a climb. Prague is ideal for history lovers and those who enjoy a vibrant nightlife. You will easily reach your daily step goal while exploring the city. Overall, Prague is an excellent choice for students seeking an affordable yet unforgettable weekend getaway.
Amsterdam to London

Another popular weekend trip from Amsterdam, although slightly more expensive, is London. By booking in advance, Eurostar tickets can be relatively affordable, with travel times of around four hours. Although an ETA is required for entry into the UK,the application process is quick and costs approximately 20£. The main highlights of this trip include museums, shopping, and of course their famous markets. I visited London just before Christmas, which meant the city was filled with festive activities, including Christmas markets and events such as Winter Wonderland, which I would highly recommend. However, London is known to be an expensive city, so make sure that you save up enough money and try to find free attractions or budget-friendly food spots while visiting. London is ideal for city lovers and those who enjoy culture and diversity!
To sum up, being a student in Amsterdam truly comes with the advantage of being able to explore so many incredible cities in such a short amount of time. Whether you’re looking for an affordable and lively trip like Prague, a big city experience like London, or even a classic destination like Paris, there is something for everyone just a few hours away. Weekend trips are the perfect way to take a break from university life, make memories with friends, and experience different cultures without having to travel far.
So if you ever feel like you need a quick escape, just book the ticket, you won’t regret it!
